ASUU To Decide On Nation Wide Strike This Weekend

It has been reported that the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will hold a crucial meeting this weekend to determine if the union will proceed on a nation wide strike action. ASUU had earlier asked all its branches in the various universities to conduct referendum of members to decide whether or not a nationwide strike should be held over its demands. .... .... The final decision on the strike is expected to be made after a review of the referendum conducted by the chapters. An earlier deadline given by ASUU to the federal government to meet its demands ended today (Friday). The scheduled meeting where ASUU will take its final decision starts today (Friday) and ends on Sunday (August 13) in Abuja. ASUU major demands include issues concerning the welfare of members as well as funding of universities among others. The Union and the federal government have been negotiating these demands since November 2016.

Robbery suspect buried alive in Ebonyi community

Angry youths in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have reportedly buried alive a suspected armed robber identified as Chukwudi Omaka. Omaka along with his gang members had allegedly robbed and killed a businessman, known as Idam Ogbonnia. Ogbonnia was reportedly killed at Amaisri community in the area. New Telegraph reports that Omaka was also among robbers who robbed a cold room known as Etuelughu, belonging to one Oko Udu Monday and another Provisions Store belonging to a businessman identified as David. The youths, after burying the suspect alive, reportedly planted a tree on the grave in accordance with the customs of the community against anyone who committed a crime. The tradition has been as old as the community. A 29-year-old brother to the man who was buried alive, Gideon Omaka, told the newspaper that he did not know anything about the robbery for which his brother was killed. Charly Boy collapses as police crack down on anti-Buhari protesters

Charly Boy, entertainer and activist, on Tuesday, collapsed at the Unity Fountain after inhaling teargas from canisters fired at protesters by anti-riot policemen. The police also fired high velocity stream of water at the protesters who were demanding that President Muhammadu Buhari either resume office or resign. Buhari has been in the UK where he is receiving medical attention since May 7 – more than 90 days. On Monday, a coalition of civil society groups under the aegis of ‘Concerned Nigerians’ hit the streets to demand that the president either resume office or resign. The group vowed to continue their protests at the Unity Fountain in Abuja until the president either returns or resigns. Ritualists den uncovered in lagos ,two burnt alive

• 2 other suspects arrested By Christopher Oji and Olajire Ishola Lagoswas yesterday in a frenzy, following the discovery of a den of ritualists in a tunnel at Obadeyi Bus Stop, Ijaiye-Ojokoro, along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway. Two suspected ritualists smoked out from the tunnel were burnt alive, while two others were arrested by policemen and soldiers. Daily Sun gathered that at about 6am yesterday, some staff of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), responsible for sweeping the road, heard a woman shouting for help in a canal leading to the tunnel. Concerned about the woman’s plight, the LAWMA staff alerted passersby, who attempted to enter the tunnel but could, as it was dark. Been withnessed by fredguru™ Gunmen on Sunday morning attacked worshippers at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu, near Nnewi, Anambra State killing at least eight. Several worshippers with gunshot wounds were also receiving treatment at the hospital. Witnesses said they feared that up to 20 people may have died.
